Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bad Girls among a host of Web3 trademark archives

Hollywood movie studios file Web3 trademark applications for teen favorite brands, including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Viacom International and Paramount Pictures have filed for metaverse and non-fungible token (NFT) trademarks for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mean Girls respectively, according to trademark attorney Mike Contoudi.

While Viacom filed its trademark applications for TMNT with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on September 6, Paramount Pictures filed its trademark applications for Mean Girls the following day. Both Paramount Pictures and Viacom International have filed the same trademarks for Mean Girls and TMNT.

The first trademark for the pair falls under International Class 9, which mainly covers electronic and digital devices used to record various facts, events and information, including equipment for recording transactions. In this case, it would cover downloadable media files containing artwork related to the brands, which have been certified by NFT.

The second trade mark for both, under IC 42, is for “scientific and technological services and research and design relating thereto; industrial analysis and research services; design and development of computer hardware and software”.

For the brand pair, this would cover the provision of non-downloadable online computer software for the transfer of crypto-assets and NFTs.

Explosion of Web3 Brands

As of Aug. 31, the number of individuals and companies that had filed Web3-related trademark applications with the USPTO doubled to about 4,150 applications filed for metaverse, or virtual “goods/services,” according to data compiled by Kontoudis. . That number easily surpasses the 1,866 filed in 2021.

Kondoudis emphasized that the rise of trademark applications has covered the Web3 space, with an increasing number of deposits linked to NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

According to Kontoudis, the 5,800 trademark applications specifically related to NFTs filed through August surpassed last year’s 3,700. Meanwhile, crypto-related trademark applications reached 3,600, 100 more than last year’s total.

Although the number of applications for trademarks related to the metasystem has declined since a peak in March, to 418 applications in August from 759, Kontoudis is confident that filings will continue. “Crypto brand deposit rate reflects prices for NFT and Metaverse products and services,” Kontoudis said.

“Submission rates for all three have slowed since peaking in March, but are still holding up and easily surpassing last year’s totals.”
