Once 2022 rolls around, Swedish House Mafia will look back and say “What a hell of a time.” The EDM supergroup consisting of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello performed two electrifying headlining performances at Coachella alongside The Weeknd, released their debut studio album. Heaven Again, and now they’re starting a new endeavor: their own collection with IKEA. Very rarely do musical artists and furniture design overlap, but Swedish House Mafia x IKEA is a match made in heaven (and in Sweden).
“With this collaboration, we wanted to essentially create what our younger selves would want – and help people like our younger selves afford affordable gear as they dive into becoming music producers.”
Before their hit singles and hectic touring schedules, the members of SHM were quirky kids with a passion for making music. The necessary equipment was not always available to them, so they often resorted to hacking IKEA products to create their own creative paradises. “Growing up, we used a lot of IKEA furniture and made our own DJ tables, studio tables and speaker stands,” Angello told Hypebeast. “With this collaboration, we wanted to essentially create what our younger selves would want – and help people like our younger selves afford affordable gear as they dive into becoming music producers.” The collection’s title, OBEGRÄNSAD — which translates to “limitless” in Swedish — is also a reflection of its purpose as it appeals to music lovers, producers, DJs and creators with limited means and unlimited creativity.
IKEA’s Swedish roots, global reach and approachable nature convinced SHM that it was the ideal partner. “There’s a big phenomenon of making music in your home,” said IKEA chief designer Friso Wiersma. “Usually we sit with the home furnishing know-how, but we’re not experts in how you make music or how to set up a functional music venue, so that’s where we helped each other out and why the collaboration was perfect.”
The collection includes more than 20 furniture solutions, all of which are wrapped in all-black to reflect the signature style of EDM artists. “Aesthetics were first and foremost in this project, followed by functionality and problem solving,” says Axwell. “Swedish House Mafia has always been about creating movements and bringing people into our world. This was a project that we were very hands-on with in terms of testing and creating each product as opposed to it being a collection that we slapped our name on just to make money.”
“The more minimalist something looks, the more work went into its design.”
Three key elements drive the range. First up is a relaxed armchair featuring a metal tube frame with continuous cushioning and a Bauhaus-inspired sensibility. There’s also a desk with two air-level speaker stands and a fold-out shelf that holds a keyboard as well as a record player — IKEA’s first since 1973. “We made sure to be super particular about every detail here,” says Axwell. “Take the record player for example, it’s such a beautiful and simple piece, but note that the more minimalist something looks, the more work went into its design.”
Elsewhere in the collection are LED floor, wall and desk lamps, clocks shaped to mimic DJ sets, a pair of shelves, stands for laptops, tablets, speakers and records, fuzzy slippers and bedroom rugs , blanket and pillow cover and FRAKTA hidden bags.
The industrial chic OBEGRÄNSAD collection — which is expected to launch in global IKEA stores in October — is a step towards democratizing music-making and elevating creative pursuits. The EDM powerhouse understands that while many people have the ability to create, having a space that is functional, accessible, affordable and inspiring can unlock your true potential to make incredible art. So whether you’re looking to add a new vinyl player to your home to chill out on Sunday mornings or shape yourself into the next hit record producer, don’t worry kid: Swedish House Mafia has a plan for you.
