Diana was always seen wearing luxury brands, but one brand she deliberately avoided wearing was Chanel.
Speaking at Harper’s BAZAAR Australia in 2018, Australian designer Jayson Brundson recounted meeting the late Princess Diana during her last visit to Australia in 1996. Here are some excerpts from Jayson’s conversation with Harper’s BAZAAR.
“I was very good friends with Jo Bailey and Jo was appointed as her hairdresser while she was here on the visit,” recalls Jason. “She hadn’t been divorced very long and Joe knew I was a big fan. He had an assistant who went with him every day to the Ritz Carlton in the morning to do her hair for the day. So he said to me, ‘you’ll love to come as an assistant my;”. on Saturday and I said, “yes of course I would, I really liked it”.
“We went to the Ritz Carlton in Double Bay, it was on the top floor I think. There were a lot of bodyguards so we went through the ladies in waiting and then we went into the huge lounge and we waited for her and she came out in a bathrobe.”
“Joe started doing her hair and chatting away, I was just there holding a brush and thinking ‘Oh my God, I’m touching Princess Diana’s hair’, she was completely starstruck. And he was on the phone with Madonna, just like you. , and I think they were talking about divorce.”
“Then after Jo got her hair done she had to get ready for a hospital visit and she said I’d wear a cream Versace skirt suit. It was a very fitted jacket and pencil skirt, and she said, “but I don’t know what accessories to wear with it.”
“Jo then said, ‘well Jason’s really good at this stuff, so why don’t you ask him?’ He said, “okay, I’ll go show you what I’ve got.”
“She went back into her bedroom, and she came out holding like handfuls of shoes and bags and threw them all on the couch. Then she said, ‘what do you think?’ great with Versace’ and he said ‘no I can’t wear linked C’s, the double C’.
“So I asked why, and he said, ‘it’s Camilla and Charles.’
“Then I saw he had some Guccis and I said they would look great, and he said, OK, I’ll wear the Guccis and that was it.”
Jason explained that Diana had worn Chanel in the past but had become reluctant after her marriage to Charles ended.
“It was definitely the timing, it was post-divorce. She would see linked Cs and they would just remind her of Charles and Camilla. The shoes were quite bold Chanel, I think they had gold linked Cs on them. And I Think about the visual of the photo, people would have condoned it since it was so fresh and post-divorce.”
“I don’t think she had anything against Chanel, I mean few women do, but I think it was about the connected C’s and what it could mean,” she added.
