Nintendo’s Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 title and release date

Nintendo has finally announced the title and release date for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

After five years of waiting, the gaming giant confirmed in a Nintendo Direct on Tuesday (September 13) that the game will be titled The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and will be released on May 12, 2023 for Nintendo Switch.

An enigmatic first-look trailer uses cave paintings to illustrate the timeless bond between Link and Princess Zelda, before cutting to some action-packed shots of the heroes.

Breathtaking scenes have been revealed of Link diving off a mountain in a cloud formation, climbing a terrifying mountain and flying above the clouds in his glider.

Fans have been waiting since 2017 for a title, with its release largely a mystery until very recently. There was disappointment earlier this year when Nintendo delayed the title to 2023.

In April, producer Eiji Aonuma explained: “We previously announced that we were aiming for a 2022 release for this game

“However, we have decided to extend our development time a bit and change the release to spring 2023. For those of you who were looking forward to its release this year, we apologize.”

While it might be a bit disappointing to have to wait until late spring 2023, the footage shown has proven that the development team is making good use of their extra time.

The game’s predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildhas become one of Nintendo’s best-selling titles of all time with 22 million copies sold, and its critical acclaim makes it one of the most beloved video games of all time.
