Manchester United fans accuse Glazers of ‘PESTS’ and ‘leeches’ for taking £33.6m in dividends

‘They’re running the club into the ground!’: Manchester United fans blast the Glazers as ‘PESTS’ and ‘leeches’ for taking £33.6m in dividends from the club despite a net loss of £115.5m.

  • The Glazers took £33.6m from Manchester United in dividends in the last financial year
  • They are the only Premier League owners to receive dividends from their club
  • Proponents believe the hefty payout is a sign of “failure rewards”
  • Protests against the Glazers’ property have grown in recent years

Manchester United fans’ anger towards the Glazers only grew after the club’s latest financial results were published on Thursday.

It was revealed that United made a net loss of £115.5m for the year to 30 June 2022, while the club’s net debt rose by £95.4m to £514.9m.

Despite this, the American owners were still rewarded with a huge payout – taking £33.6m from the club in dividends.

This is an £11m increase in the last dividend payment due to deferred payments in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Glazers, who have reigned at Old Trafford since 2005, are the only owners in the Premier League to receive dividends from their club.

“£115m loss last season and the Glazers are still getting millions in dividends, absolute disgrace,” one fan tweeted.

“What a joke,” said another. “Big debt, but still paying a huge dividend to those leeches, the Glazers.”

A third added: “Glazers got a £35m dividend while the club lost over £100m this financial year lol. They are the definition of vermin.’

The message from United fans continues to be the same – they are desperate for a takeover at Old Trafford.

“The Glazers are falling into the ground while being rewarded with dividends,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “These people have to go.”

“The Glazers have made £33.6m in dividends from the club. Take them off now!!!!’ another urged.

United’s dismal financial results came after the club achieved their worst Premier League score last season, just 58.

Protests against the Glazers’ ownership have grown in recent years as fans continue to lose patience with a lack of progress on and off the pitch.

In a statement on Thursday, the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust criticized the Glazers for “rewarding failure”.

“Today’s financial results from United cap a period when the club has failed on the pitch, finishing sixth in the Premier League with our worst points for decades,” the statement said.

“However, the results confirm that the owners were the only ones in the Premier League to pay a dividend last year. “There is nothing wrong in principle with companies paying dividends to owners, but there should be no rewards for failure and that is what we are seeing here.

“At a football club we believe that dividends should only be paid when there is both financial success and success on the pitch.

“Through the Fans Advisory Committee and the Fans Forum, MUST representatives will now call for an urgent review of the club’s dividend policy to ensure that the rewards of failure we see revealed today do not happen again.

“Overall, this set of results reinforces our view that the club is in dire need of new capital investment and the proposed redevelopment of the stadium should be funded through a new share issue to bring new capital to the club rather than more debt which will were creating further depletion of the club’s finances”.
