Machine-A by Stavros Karelis is a London institution. From carrying all the best Raf Simons collections earlier than most other retailers to stocking and showcasing ever new names like Liam Hodges, Martine Rose, 1017 ALYX 9SM, A-COLD-WALL*, JW Anderson, Coperni and so many more, it’s safe to say that Machine-A has one of the strongest shopping sections in the game. Now, it’s taking that unparalleled energy to Shanghai, the next location the imprint aims to dominate.
Coinciding with the launch of their new store, Machine-A tapped friends Raf Simons, Matthew M Williams, Martine Rose, Coperni, Ottolinger, Yueqi Qi and WINDOWSEN to each give their unique perspectives on what ” A” for them, or to tell a story about the beginning of their career. This is brought to life in a short film directed by up-and-coming Chinese filmmaker AJ Duan, shot between Machine-A’s respective homes in London and Shanghai.
For Raf, “A” is “Motive Force,” apt given the store’s ever-ready approach to tracking and stocking the next big change in fashion. Similarly, Williams notes that “A is a place of beginning,” while Ottolinger says “A is for staying curious,” and Rose believes that “A is for forever taking risks,” again, all the things that attributed to the success of Engine-A.
