In winter, our skin tends to become dry and flaky, while in summer the signs of the skin vary turning more towards the oily side. You’re also more likely to deal with heat on your skin, literally! The weather demands that you go the extra mile to understand how to put the right layers on your skin to protect it from the sun, pollution, and stress that summer brings.!
Health Shots contacted Dr. Kashish Kalra, Head of Department of Dermatology at Max Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi, to find out about the right layers for summer skincare.
Rock your summer skincare the right way!
Summer is usually synonymous with heat, sweat, dirt and grime that accumulate on our skin. Those who usually go outdoors, either to run errands or for some job, have to take extra care so that the health of their skin remains intact.
Thus, in both seasons, there can be two different regimes for the same face.
Here are some expert-suggested tips for layering your summer skincare the right way.
1. Use a cleanser that exfoliates.
“In the summer, our oily skin can absorb all the dirt and grime outside. So you can start with the basics, with a facial wash/cleanser. You can opt for a face wash that is also exfoliating. If you tend to sweat a lot or have an oily texture, you can get a face wash that exfoliates and has certain active ingredients,” suggests the expert.
You can easily rely on an exfoliating cleanser or face wash in summers as it helps to deep clean clogged pores thus preventing skin problems.
2. A toner is always essential
People with oily or acne-prone skin can make their problems worse in the summer. Therefore, toners are a must as they work on clogged pores and oily skin caused by heat and sunscreen. You can opt for toners that contain aloe vera, green tea extracts, and vitamin E or C that help stop the formation of new acne and strike acne-causing bacteria at the root.

3. Use a light, water-based moisturizer
“Just like winter, you shouldn’t go for a thick or sticky moisturizer. You can opt for a very light moisturizer, water-based or gel-based, that won’t clog pores and just seals in clean skin,” says the expert.

4. Sunscreen is non-negotiable
The same rule applies to sunscreens, they can be very light or gel based depending on the changing weather. In fact, in summer you can use sun protection sprays on your face and body. You can apply water-based sunscreen to your face.
If you want to put on makeup, you can apply it last after sunscreen. In case you are going out, you can carry a sunscreen spray for touch ups after a while.
5. The nightly routine
The expert says: “Your nighttime skincare routine stays intact, cleansing, toning and hydrating. However, if there is any makeup on your skin, remove it with a makeup remover first. Also, you can apply a non-sticky serum like there are many water-based vitamin C serums available on the market. Vitamin C has depigmenting properties and also soothes the skin in summer.”
Oily skinned beauties can also try retinol in summer as it feels very dry in winter. Lastly, you can block it with a suitable moisturizer.
