House Of The Dragon introduced a major player you may have missed

Major House of the Dragon spoiler ahead.

In House Of The Dragon’s last episode, Viserys mission to get married Rhaenyra has turned it up to 11 with a literal parade of eligible men (and boys) lining up in front of her in an attempt to win her hand.

Of course, Rhaenyra was having none of it, with her position as the future queen of the realm doing nothing to make her rush to find a husband.

But among the line of male suitors was one who will play a truly important role in her future – and that is the young knight who was mercilessly mocked as he made a play for affections.

Who is Samwell Blackwood?

Samwell Blackwood has the blood of the First Men in his veins and is a descendant of a line of kings who previously ruled the Riverlands. The Blackwoods played a role in Rhaenyra’s ancestor – Aegon the Conqueror – eventually gaining power over Westeros in the first place.

However, he was significantly younger than Rhaenyra, and compared to his much older counterparts, he stuck out like a sore thumb.

Struck for saying that he would swear to protect her (despite having a literal dragon at her disposal), his proposal was somewhat easily dismissed, with Rhaenyra opting to find someone more similar to her – in age as well as in intelligence and stature.

While he was only on screen for a few minutes, he certainly left an impression, eventually stabbing one of his love rivals – a member of House Bracken – in a heated argument as Rhaenyra walked away.

But then again, the Brackens and Blackwoods have a long history of rivalry, so this might be less about Rhaenyra’s love and more about good old male egos.

What is Samwell Blackwood’s role in Rhaenyra’s life?

While he may not have been able to woo the princess, it seems the pair have a bond that will be seen later in the Dance Of Dragons civil war.

The battle, which will ultimately pit Rhaenyra against her younger brother Aegon II, will see the noble houses divided in their loyalties. Samwell Blackwood swears his allegiance to Rhaenyra as the rightful heir to the throne.

In comparison, House Bracken is devoted to Aegon’s side.

The older Samwell, if the show continues to follow the original trajectory of the series described in the books, will see him continue to display his small but mighty skills in battle, using cunning to target the Brackens, weakening them by targeting the camping Brakare , raiding their villages and burning their crops.

He eventually loses his life in a fight against Ser Amos Bracken, who dies shortly after from a “strange arrow” that may or may not have been shot by Samwell’s younger sister.

So while their potential match may have been nothing more than a fleeting idea, it looks like their family ties will survive for at least a few more decades.

House of the Dragon broadcast on Sundays at HBOand on Mondays Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Season 2 confirmed. Game of Thrones season 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
