Yes, sunscreen is essential in any skin care routine. But who do you find one that works best for you? Also, there are many options that make it even more difficult to choose. Not to worry, popular dermatologist Dr. Rashmi Shetty took to her Instagram to share the best sunscreen for different skin types.

Why is sunscreen so important for your skin?

Whether it’s summer or not, your skin needs protection throughout the year. In addition, it is recommended to use sunscreen even if you do not go out any day. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays can be extremely damaging to the skin. Too much sun exposure can also lead to skin cancer. During the summer, these rays are even more intense, putting skin cells at greater risk of damage. By damage we mean skin conditions like rashes, sunburn, acne, dark spots, wrinkles, and even cancer. A study published by Harvard Medical School found that sunscreen protects you from three types of cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Studies have also found that applying sunscreen creates a shield on the skin that protects it from sun damage. In addition to providing protection, sunscreen improves skin health by preserving vital skin proteins such as keratin, collagen, and elastin. Since sunscreen protects you from so much damage, you should include it in your skincare routine.

Choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type

Sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of every skincare routine, but choosing one can be difficult. Here’s what Dr. Shetty shared about the type of sunscreen to use based on your skin type.

1. All skin types

There are certain sunscreens on the market that are ideal for all skin types, the water fusion sunscreen. Whether you have oily, sensitive or atopic skin, it will adapt to all types of skin textures.

2. For acne-prone skin

If you have acne or oily skin, you should be careful about the skin care products you choose. The same goes for sunscreen. Dr. Shetty recommends using a silicone-based sunscreen that can work wonders on open pores, oily skin, and acne-prone skin.

3. For skin with imperfections

The spotted skin is the one that has many marks. Whether your blemishes are harmful or not, wearing sunscreen is critical. However, if you want to hide blemishes a bit, you can add tinted sunscreen to your skincare routine. This, in fact, is a great option for women who do not like to wear makeup, especially during the summer season.

4. For oily skin

Summer makes things worse for people with oily skin. If you also have oily skin, there is a great sunscreen option that you can try. Dr. Shetty recommends using powdered sunscreen. Powder sunscreen is nothing more than a product that imitates the texture of a setting powder. However, you should not forget to touch up if you want your skin to remain protected.

Note: Regardless of your skin type, it is extremely important to add sunscreen to your skin to prevent exposure to UVA and UVB rays. With that said, be sure to check with your doctor before making any changes to your regimen.
