First trailer for Steven Spielberg’s new biopic

Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg’s new film has just released its first trailer, and movie fans are in for a treat — the film is based on the acclaimed director’s life.

The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film inspired by Spielberg’s childhood growing up in Arizona and dreaming of becoming a director. The film stars Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, who is based on a young Spielberg, while Michelle Williams and Paul Dano appear as Sammy’s mom and dad, based on Spielberg’s own parents. Seth Rogen also stars in a role based on his beloved uncle.

Spielberg directed the film himself — his first film since last year West Side Story — while co-writing the screenplay with regular collaborator Tony Kushner, who wrote the scripts for three previous Spielberg films in West Side Story, Lincoln and Munich.

The film premiered this weekend at the Toronto Film Festival and early reviews are very good, with many calling it one of Spielberg’s best and most personal works. It currently sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film will likely draw comparisons to Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. This film was a semi-autobiographical story based on Branagh’s childhood in Belfast as he grew up wanting to be a director. Both images definitely evoke a sense of nostalgia and chase your dreams.

Belfast It did very well for Branagh, earning him his first Oscar — for best original screenplay. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.

Spielberg will be hoping his film can reach those heights, although he is a three-time Oscar winner having already won the Oscar for Best Picture (for Schindler’s List) and two Oscars for best director (for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan).

Meanwhile, Spielberg’s other upcoming project, Indiana Jones 5, which he is producing, will be released next year. Excitement for this highly-anticipated picture has grown with the tease of John Williams’ score for Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for release on June 23, 2023.
