CHRIS SUTTON: Tottenham can hit Sporting Lisbon where it hurts… but I fear ragged Liverpool will hit another note in their Champions League clash with Ajax

  • Liverpool face Ajax as Spurs travel to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League
  • The Reds were beaten 4-1 by Napoli last week, while Spurs beat Marseille 2-0
  • Chris Sutton predicts the outcome of Tuesday’s Champions League games

The second week of the Champions League begins on Tuesday, with all English teams having taken the weekend off to honor and mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week.

Tuesday’s action sees Liverpool host Ajax less than a week after their 4-1 defeat by Napoli and Tottenham travel to Lisbon to face Sporting, having beaten Marseille 2-0 last Wednesday.

Below, Sportsmail Columnist Chris Sutton takes a look at the two Champions League games and predicts the results.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a response from Liverpool when they face Ajax on Tuesday

Liverpool – Ajax

I kept thinking, because of what Liverpool had achieved in previous seasons, that it was just a blip he was on.

But with the way Napoli won 4-1 and made Liverpool’s defense look like tourists on an Italian holiday, it has become more than that. Something is wrong there.

From Virgil van Dijk at the back to Mohamed Salah up front, they haven’t clicked.

The out-of-form Reds were crushed 4-1 by Napoli in the Champions League last Wednesday.

Liverpool players were praised when they were in song. Now we have to see how they respond when they hit bum notes. Ajax will leave.

They are fearless and beat Rangers 4-0 last week. There is no time to waste for Liverpool to get their season back on track, but I fear Ajax will take something away from Anfield.

Predicted score: Draw 2-2

Sporting Lisbon – Tottenham

Antonio Conte does not have the longest Champions League record. Not with Juventus, Chelsea or Inter.

You wondered if he was making excuses early on when he complained about Tottenham’s congestion ahead of last week’s opening group game.

However, Spurs started a leaflet against Marseille, an emotional Richarlison scoring twice as he continued to show why he was worth their £60m investment.

Sporting are at home to Lisbon so I expect the Tottenham game to go, but that will suit Conte’s counter-attacking style. They have the flying arrows to hurt Sporting and make it two wins out of two in their group.

Predicted score: 2-1 Tottenham
