Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer revealed – here are the details

Activision and Infinity Ward introduced the multiplayer section Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 today ahead of the open beta, which starts tomorrow.

One multiplayer feature the developers showed off was swimming and Aquatic Combat. Instead of dying when you hit the water like in previous games, the action now takes place on, over and in the water. There will be various elements, such as currents and waves, and the water may be clear, cloudy, polluted or have debris.

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Reveal

In the open beta, maps with water will feature these improvements, and you can use water as a stealth or escape mechanism. You can even change stance or sprint and look down to dive underwater. If you are shooting underwater using sidearms and certain equipment, your gun projectile will be affected by the increased density, so you may need to change your aim. You’ll also need to pay close attention to Tactical items and may need to try out brand new strategies when attacking boats, underwater enemies, or when dodging or deploying an explosive.

The multiplayer portion of Modern Warfare 2 also features additional traversal mechanics. For example, you can crawl or dive across the floor and even use the Ledge Hang which allows you to peek out of a cloak and look around. The developers are also testing the ability to pick up a pistol and engage from a Ledge Hang.

Multiplayer will also feature more action-oriented maneuvering in the new vehicles. Expect a variety of tactical developments, including the ability to lean out the windows and shoot or cover the roof of the vehicle, destroy various parts on the vehicles, and even pop tires.

Speaking of vehicles, you can use multiple land, air and water vehicles depending on the game mode and map. Nine of them are ground-based and range from a hatchback car to a heavy tank. All terrain vehicles are back and there are new terrain vehicles, tactical vehicles, SUVs and the cargo truck. There are also two tanks and an armored personnel carrier.

If you like to fly, there’s the Light Helo as well as a new Heavy Chopper that acts a bit like an airborne cargo truck in terms of carrying capacity. If you’re on the water, you can navigate narrower waterways with the Rigid Inflatable Boat or use the Armored Patrol Boat which has an armored hull and a mounted .50 caliber machine gun.

In multiplayer, Tactical Equipment and Field Upgrades have more unique options than before. There is the Tactical Camera which allows you to monitor an area and when an enemy passes by, it emits a warning sound. There’s also the Shock Stick which sticks to surfaces and then emits a burst of electricity that damages enemies, destroys equipment and messes with vehicles.

Another piece of Tactical Equipment is the Drill Charge which you place on the outside of a building. It will drill a hole and once it finishes drilling, it fires a grenade that deals splash damage. Another is DDoS. This attack lets you know if there is equipment or vehicles in your line of sight. If so, it will temporarily disable them and also disrupt enemy sensors in the immediate area.

There are also Perk Packs consisting of four Perks – two base, plus two more known as Bonus and Ultimate. All are won during a multiplayer match, usually between four and eight minutes in non-round-based modes. Kills, assists, objectives and tactical games can unlock them faster. You can even edit your Perk Pack in Loadout.

And, what sounds more fun, to us at least, is the Inflatable Decoy. This polymer dummy inflates after you throw it and can also act as a proximity mine.

With Modern Warfare 2, the Gunsmith weapon customization system will come with new improvements and the biggest change is the Weapon platform. Instead of being in a separate family this time, the weapons are coming to the Platforms. This allows you full control over the weapons you bring to matches.

How it works, you’ll rank up to get each basic weapon platform. The first weapon unlocked on a Platform is known by its receiver which is an attachment. Unlock more receivers as you progress and gain access to additional weapons on a Platform.

Changing a receiver will change the weapon, so it will be considered new when building a Loadout, but will remain on the same Weapon Platform. You can change the receiver to build a weapon with different capabilities such as Automatic Rifle, Light Machine Gun, Battle Rifle or Submachine Gun.

After selecting your weapon of choice, you’ll begin leveling it up and Platforming it up and up through two different component pools. These are weapon platform attachments which are parts that can only be used within the weapon platform, such as barrels, magazines, stocks and rear grips. Then there are the Universal Attachments that can be used on all weapon platforms, and examples include muzzles, lower barrels, ammo, lasers and optics.

If you unlock a Universal Attachment, it will be usable throughout Gunsmith and only needs to be unlocked once.

The game will also feature Weapon Vaults. The FJX Cinder Weapon Vault will be free to use in the open beta and full game for those who pre-order the Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 2. It is a fully unlocked weapon platform.

Having a Weapon Vault means you have every attachment from a corresponding weapon platform ready to go. This is the “Ultimate Weapon Blueprint” as it instantly unlocks dozens of native platform attachments. You can access instant customization with a collection of Special Weapon Platform Attachments, and each attachment within a Weapon Vault features a specific cosmetic appearance.

The open beta will feature two types of multiplayer maps to play: Battle Maps with up to 32v32 and Base Maps which are 6v6.

Battle maps were created for Ground War modes with multiple teams of players per team. Here, every building can be explored, vehicles can be driven, and various play styles are available on a single battle map. AI combatants will appear on Ground War maps in the new Invasion Mode, which Infinity Ward hopes will offer players gameplay that is both “chaotic and extremely rewarding.”

Base maps are where special task forces are deployed and all are tailored exclusively for 6v6 game modes. They are slightly smaller and simpler in design than previous multiplayer maps. There is the Valderas Museum located in Spain, the Farm 18 educational facility and the Mercado Las Almas small market. Additional maps will be available at launch and each season.

Multiplayer also features other modes such as Team Deathmatch and Domination, but there are three brand new modes planned during the open beta. One is Knockout, which has you trying to eliminate the opposing force or hold the pack to win. There are no respawns and teammates can revive each other. There’s also Prisoner Rescue, which puts breach and siege gameplay front and center, and Invasion for Ground War, which is a massive Deathmatch on large maps.

You can also enjoy the game from a new perspective. All multiplayer and specific modes in Modern Warfare 2 will have clearly defined “Third-Person” playlists. For the open beta, the intention is to keep the third-person and first-person playlists separate, but feedback and gameplay could change that plan.

In this mode, the camera is placed a few feet behind your operator’s right shoulder. This gives you more perspective on your general surroundings, in exchange for less depth of field in front of you. You can alternate shoulders helping you when peeking around corners. Zooming is automatic whenever the camera moves and the camera stops before it collides with objects you are close to. Your crosshair is automatically set to the middle of the screen, along with an “X” whenever the camera is angled behind an object. When you aim down, the perspective changes to a first-person view, allowing for more accurate shooting.

When Modern Warfare 2 is released, Firing Range will be available. This is an offline proving ground with three shooting lanes, ledges for wrapping and multiple targets at different ranges.

Once you’ve completed the main campaign in the game, you can play Special Ops with another player in a cooperative experience that lets you explore large-scale hot zones for multiple branching missions.

Later this year, you can enjoy Raids, which are three-player co-op that requires teamwork and strategy, solving puzzles in between bouts.

For PlayStation users who pre-order the game through the PlayStation Store, the exclusive Operator Hiro “Oni” Watanabe will be available at launch. The wielder brings with him a high level weapon design.

And finally, for those who like a bit of fair play, Ricochet Anti-Cheat and PC Kernel Level Driver will be available on day one for both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

While today’s Modern Warfare 2 reveal focused on multiplayer, don’t forget that it also features a campaign that you can play up to a week early if you digitally pre-order the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on October 28.
