Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta update brings back ground warfare

Infinity Ward released a patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Beta weekend 2, which brings back Ground War, introduces the sandbox team deathmatch mode called Invasion and makes some improvements to the game based on player feedback. The open beta for all platforms will begin tomorrow, September 24, at 10 AM. PT. It will end on the 26th at the same time.

  • Introducing two new battle maps: Sariff Bay and Sa’id.

  • Ground War is back! Enjoy up to 32v32 combat with brand new vehicles and dynamic combat.
  • Introducing Sandbox TDM, Invasion (or what we like to call Shipment of Ground War). Invasion pits two teams of 20 players and 20 AI against each other. With large maps, 80 fighters, water games, ground vehicles, aircraft and more – it’s absolute mayhem!
  • The Third Person Moshpit returns for Weekend Two.


  • We’ve made adjustments to player visibility that will make enemy targets easier to spot.


  • The perk profit rate will remain the same for the start of Beta Weekend One. Once all platforms are open, we will significantly increase the profit rate.


  • Decreased the overall distance you could hear enemy and allied footsteps
  • Mix the volume of local and non-local playback slide sounds to be more in tune with other motions
  • Added equalizer to soften allies’ footsteps against enemy footsteps, making enemy sound more distinct
  • Custom mix presets – especially the mix of ambient sounds, which will make steps slightly less punchy

  • Reduced ranged damage
  • Lower headshot multiplier

The “guns for guns” list from Weekend One remains the same for Weekend Two (see tweet above).


  • The Valderas Museum is back after lighting fixes
  • Fixed various geographic items in Farm 18, Breenburgh Hotel and Mercado Las Almas


  • We ran into a number of UX bugs, including Gunsmith and progression issues. The level cap for Weekend 2 is level 30. If you played in Weekend 1, your progress should carry over to Weekend Two.
  • We are also working on a number of UI and UX improvements for release.
